In The News: Rising Ocean Temperatures Threatens Global Fish Supply
The World Is Losing Fish to Eat as Oceans Warm, Study Find
Dr. Chris Free from UC Santa Barbara recently published in Sciencedramatic study indicating warming ocean trends are impacting fisheries more than previous predictions. Poor fisheries management in combination with climate change have typically shared the blame. This study separates the negative effects of climate change alone which paints a much more dire picture of future supply chain impacts. A 4.1 percent decline in available fish supply since 1930's was noted- this number is equivalent to nearly 1.5 metric tons of fish. Not only will this greatly threaten many coastal communities who rely on 70% of their protein from fish sources, but the economic survival of entire industries depend upon healthy fish supplies.
Regulations need to be updated to reflect the effects of climate change. Stricter and more sustainable management approaches must be undertaken across the globe.
"Amid these changing conditions, fish are shifting where they live, in search of their preferred temperatures. High ocean temperatures can kill off both the fish themselves and the sources of food they depend on."-Dr. Free
“Fish are like Goldilocks: They don’t like their water too hot or too cold,” said Malin L. Pinsky, an associate professor in the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences at Rutgers University and a co-author of the new study.

This is terrible! I particularly like fish very much. It is truly devastating to see the more of the worlds supply is disappearing due to our poor habits. Our contamination ways have got to stop before we starve ourselves or poison ourselves to cancer!
